Thrilled to have shared insights from my doctoral thesis at CSSE 2025! 🎓 My presentation, “Reframing Togetherness: Human and Non-Human Entanglements in Actor-Networks of Learning,” explored how knowledge is mobilized in diverse learning environments, from a university course to the online game League of Legends (LoL). Drawing on Actor-Network Theory (ANT), I tracked the movement of knowledge actors like the “ward” in LoL and the “Karnaugh map” (K-map) in a university course. This research reveals how the interplay of human and non-human elements shapes distinct learning experiences and outcomes.
My exploratory research offers fresh perspectives for game-based learning (GBL), curriculum studies, higher education, and ANT. Key contributions include:
- Developing an “actor-network of learning” (ANL) framework that extends ANT to the education field, analyzing and comparing learning networks in different environments.
- Focusing on how network composition influences learner behavior and outcomes, beyond specific tools or settings.
- Demonstrating how small non-human factors (ward and K-map) can outline learning trajectories and reflect on learning impacts.
- Showcasing the knowledge dissemination structure and dynamics within League of Legends, compared to a university course.
- Highlighting the significance of uncertainty in learning and understanding its impact from both gaming and academic perspectives.
- And many others
While I regret not having a Q&A session due to scheduling, preparing the presentation was a valuable opportunity to refine my ideas because “sharing is the best way of learning”. If you’re interested in this research, you can find the complete paper here: https://ir.lib.uwo.ca/etd/10763/
